As of Friday, April 11, 2025, according to Insider Higher Ed, more than 150 US colleges and universities have identified at least 790 international students who have had their legal status disrupted by the US Government (State Department and ICE).
These disruptions include F-1 and J-1 visas being revoked and/or F-1 and J-1 students’ SEVIS (Student & Exchange Visitor Information System) records being terminated. SEVIS is a database used by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to track and monitor information about nonimmigrant students (F visas) and exchange visitors (J visas) in the United States.
The disruptions have been instigated by a myriad of reasons including speeding tickets, political engagement, and in some reported cases, for no discernible cause at all.
International students may not be proactively notified of changes to their SEVIS records. If you are an international student, we recommend you regularly check in with your school to make sure your SEVIS record remains active.
