Reminder:  New I-9 form required on February 2
published 29 January 2009

Jackson & Hertogs wishes to remind our clients that effective Monday, February 2, 2009, employers must use the February 2, 2009 version of Form I-9 for initial employment authorization verification.  The new I-9 Form must also be used for any reverification of employment authorization that is performed on or after February 2, 2009.  Any Form I-9 completed prior to February 2 should be done using the June 2007 version of the Form.

The I-9 Form was revised to reflect recent amendments to the list of acceptable employment verification documents an employer may accept.  Employers must provide individuals who are completing Form I-9 with the list of acceptable documents that is included in the February 2009 version of Form I-9.  For additional I-9 guidance, employers may wish to review our FAQ on Form I-9, which addresses many common I-9 questions.

Employers may download the new I-9 Form from the USCIS website.

If you have questions or concerns about I-9 procedures, please contact your Jackson & Hertogs attorney.  Jackson & Hertogs provides I-9 services, including training of HR staff, auditing of I-9 files, and electronic I-9 completion and storage.
