The "M" Visa

The M nonimmigrant category is for students and their immediate dependent family members (i.e., spouse and unmarried children under age 21) who intend to enroll in an established vocational or other recognized nonacademic institution, other than in language programs.

For both visa issuance and admission to the U.S., the M-1 student must present a fully executed Form I-20M-N/ID (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (M-1) Student Status-For Vocational Students) Admission is for the period of time necessary to complete the study noted on the Form I-20M plus 30 days or for one year, whichever is less. Change of Status, extensions of status, and school transfers are permitted with prior USCIS approval. However, USCIS has imposed restrictions on changing status to some other nonimmigrant visa categories, e.g., F-1 and H-1B.

Employment is not permitted without USCIS authorization. A period of practical training may be authorized. Application for and receipt of an Employment Authorization Document card is required prior to commencing employment pursuant to practical training.
