Shredding at the California Service Center
published 15 May 2002

On May 12, 2002, the Los Angeles Times reported that the INS is investigating allegations that some documents mailed to the California Service Center (CSC) may have been improperly shredded by one of its contractors. At this time, there is no "definitive proof" that the contractor shredded documents. The article recommends that individuals contact the CSC if they have not received a receipt in 30 days, and CSC has expanded its telephone hours to address concerns of affected individuals.

Although the time period of the possible shredding incidents cannot be provided, the INS Office of Internal Audit initiated its investigation last month.
